What do you get when you combine a chocolate lab on the loose with:

    •  Animal Services
    •   A Police Squad
    •   A Half Marathon
    •   -&- the Internet?

A whole lotta love for a wacky dog named Boogie!

The dog was recently awarded a medal for finishing the aforementioned run on his own. But, where did this story begin? On October 5, 2013, the Evansville (Ind.) Police Dept. initiated this Facebook post which was accompanied by an endearing shot of the lab in question:

“Participants in today’s half-marathon had an unexpected guest runner. A chocolate lab joined the runners just as the race started on Reitz Hill. The dog managed to complete the entire course without assistance.

After crossing the finish line, he was picked up by animal control and taken to their shelter for some much needed rest. Because he did not officially enter the race, we do not have his race times.

However, we are confident he set a new course record for an unassisted dog. Anyone who might recognize this champion runner is asked to help him get back home.”

A full marathon clocks in at 26.2 miles, so this pooch pawed his way thru nearly 13.1 miles!

Fellow runners and other Facebook followers responded to the EPD post with:

“He passed me on Main St. around mile 7. He was a happy ole guy!” – Lori Harter (9:06 am)

“He is resting and hopefully his parents (owners) will come looking for him. Please share! And a huge thank you to the great EPD for assisting this guy!” – Evansville Animal Care & Control (9:26 am)

“He ran great with me for a mile or so. Seems like a very sweet boy!” – Lauren Logel Burch (9:29 am)

And then came what may have been the best news of all:

“RECLAIMED!!! The parents reclaimed Boogie from our facility” – Evansville Animal Care & Control (9:51 am)

Later that afternoon, the dog’s owner posted his own reply:

“Boogie walked in the door, went straight to his bed and has been sleeping ever since. I’m sure he enjoyed all of the company. Sorry about the late registration!” – Jerry Butts (1:48 pm)

On October 7, 2013, the EPD posted an update to their Nixle page. Nixle is real-time, mobile messaging platform which enables government agencies, businesses and organizations to reach out to each other and the public.

The entry was titled “Owner found!” and read as follows:

“We are happy to announce that ‘Boogie,’ the world’s first dog to complete a sanctioned half-marathon race with no human assistance, has been reunited with his owners.

After scorching the soggy 13.1 mile course, Boogie was unable to find his way back home. Following his social media debut, he was picked up at animal control. He is now resting comfortably at home.

Boogie refused to comment when asked about potential sponsorship deals for his next race.”

The next day, the Associated Press explained that 100-pound, 8-year-old Boogie wiggled free from his leash the Friday prior to the race. It was his fourth such escape. And, yet, despite his bad-dog behavior he still earned a competition medal like all the other runners. And why not?

Per AP reports, his race time was 2 hours 15 minutes, beating 1,128 other runners to the finish!
