“We can’t go back,” insists MeaZea. The mermaid squints her eyes. She can’t see the stob goblins. The shadows are too dark, and the air is too strange.

From these Mining Roads

WooFZee whines. He shakes his head, taking a small step away from the darkness. “They won’t let us go any further. We have to turn back. They just keep saying that – you can hear them now, can’t you? They’re talking about the mining roads.”

MeaZea’s lips pull into a thin line. She runs her hand over WooFZee’s head and, though she cannot actually hear the song of the stob goblin’s, though she can only hear the sound of the bells in the very far distance, the mermaid still refuses to leave.

She asks, voice loud and steady, “what are the mountain roads?”

The stob goblins hiss and spit, swarming in the darkness. Their eyes are yellow and piercing.

It is deep
Deep within
These mining roads
We cannot win

WooFZee repeats their response, serving as the translator between mermaid and stob goblin.

MeaZea’s frown deepens. “WooFZee…what if the queen of this comet is wrong?”

WooFZee asks, “what do you mean?”

“What if something else is living within the mines?” MeaZea shakes her head. “I just…they haven’t attacked us. The stob goblin’s just don’t want us to go further into the mines.”

The hissing gets louder. Claws scrape over the stone walls, over the floors, even over the ceiling. It seems as though the stob goblin’s have completely surrounded the duo.

We cannot hide
These mining roads
Are dark inside
Go away
Before end of day
We cannot save
If you stay

WooFZee doesn’t want to admit it, but he thinks that MeaZea is right. The wolf grunts, whines, takes a small step forward. Loudly, he responds to the song by saying, “we aren’t here to fight, and we aren’t going to leave. We can help. Whatever’s going on, whatever you’re trying to hide, we can help.”

Slowly, the stob goblins start to vanish. The hissing stops. The scrape of claws grows and then vanishes. Yellow eyes fade into the darkness. Eventually, only one remains.

Then, it too, vanishes.

MeaZea gulps. “Alright, WooFZee. I guess this means we can go further into the mines. Let’s find…what was it?”

WooFZee growls, uneasy with the entire ordeal. “Red bells. They were talking about red bells.”

MEaZea nods. “Right. Then let’s go find the red bells.”
